Vehicle fire reported on Bay Avenue
03/09/2009
Hannibal, MO - A quick-thinking resident on Bay Avenue averted a potentially serious situation Sunday evening when his vehicle caught fire inside a garage.
According to the Hannibal Fire Department, Shang L. Williams was changing the fuel filter of his 1996 Isuzu 4x4 which was parked inside an attached garage. Gasoline from the old filter, which was placed on the floor, ran over to a nearby drop light that had been placed on the floor. The heat from the light ignited the fuel, catching on fire the light, some tools, an old mattress and the right wheel area of the vehicle.
Before the fire could spread to the garage structure, Williams pushed the vehicle out of the garage. Williams used a fire extinguisher to put out the flames on the mattress and garage floor. Hannibal Fire Department personnel, who received the alarm at 7:25 p.m., quickly extinguished the vehicle fire.
According to the fire department, the tools, light and mattress were heavily damaged in the fire. The vehicle sustained moderate damage.
There were no injuries.
